Administrative and residential building

Clara-Zetkin-Straße 15
Built:
1927/28
Architect:
Martin Knauthe
This administrative and residential building in Clara-Zetkin-Straße 15 is one of the most prestigious examples of New Building in Halle. It was designed by architect Martin Knauthe to house the Union of Health Insurance Funds Saxony-Anhalt. The building comprises three asymmetrically arranged cubes and employs the most important principles of Modernism as conceived by Walter Gropius, such as a flat roof and an unadorned and functional façade. By contrasting horizontals and verticals, and light and dark facades, the building stands in clear opposition to the neighbouring residential development which is mainly from the nineteenth and early twentieth century.
